Anticipation – The End is Where We Start From Some themes
  • In every living system, anticipation and reaction complement each other in ever-changing proportion.
  • Research of cerebral activity (fMRI, PET, etc.) confirms that many activities (e.g., gait, digestion, sex, face recognition, etc.) are based on anticipatory behaviors.
  • Given the same initial conditions, a stone always falls the same way. Physics can describe the process in detail. A cat never falls the same way. Anticipation is the distinguishing factor.
  • A possibilistic description, in contrast to a probabilistic distribution, is bound to help us better understand prevention, security, creativity, trust.

Reviews
Mihai Nadin reveals in this well-designed book how "Anticipation" functions in complex systems. Anticipation is approached from twelve different perspectives: systems theory, prediction, co-relation, quantum physics, possibility theory, cybernetics, and power relations, modeling, simulation. (Polykum 8 03).

Preserving an open mind to all conceivable variants of a future is the central driving force behind [Nadin's] thought and action. (form 190, July/August 2003)
